Here’s a curated list of my favorite (and most epic) engagement session locations across the state—places I’ve personally worked at and know intimately. These spots don’t just photograph beautifully—they also help couples feel relaxed, inspired, and connected.
1. ledges state park - Boone, IA
One of the most dramatic natural settings in Iowa, Ledges features sandstone cliffs, wooded trails, and a scenic stone bridge. The textures here—from mossy rocks to flowing creeks—make every shot feel earthy and timeless. In the fall, the foliage is unmatched. See this session from Ledges here.
2. Kent park - Tiffin, ia

3. pella, ia - Dutch charm
Pella is overflowing with character—especially in the spring with its famous tulips and Dutch architecture. It feels like a European village right in Iowa. We’ll stroll through Molengracht Plaza or windmills for a vibrant, storybook feel. See this Pella session here.
4. Jester Park – Granger, IA

5. des moines art center garden - des moines, ia
Tucked behind the galleries, the Des Moines Art Center’s outdoor garden is a quiet, elegant oasis. With its curated landscaping, stone paths, sculptures, and architectural lines, it’s a perfect mix of natural beauty and artistic charm. See how the Art Center garden elevates an engagement session.
6. council bluffs, IA /omaha - river's edge park
Right along the Missouri River, and at the border of Iowa and Nebraska, this modern park provides stunning skyline views, cool pedestrian bridges, and grassy hills. It’s perfect for couples looking for a blend of urban and natural. It's right next to Gene Leahy Mall at the Riverfront as well, which offers a variety of backgrounds for engagement photos. 7. lake red rock - otley, ia (near pella)

8. Gray's lake - Des moines, ia

11. brenton arboretum - dallas center, ia

12. water works park - des moines, ia

Greenwood Park is one of Des Moines’ most versatile photo locations. Nestled near the Art Center, it features a tranquil pond, wooded trails, stone steps, and even a small waterfall tucked into the landscape. It’s ideal for couples who want nature with a touch of elegance—especially in fall, when the leaves turn into a warm, colorful backdrop. 17. big creek state park + spillway - polk city, ia

This tree farm is straight out of a winter fairytale—think rows of evergreens, soft snow (if we’re lucky), and cozy flannel vibes. But it’s not just for winter sessions! The symmetry of the tree rows and golden evening light in late summer and fall make it a dreamy location year-round. It’s ideal for couples who love that woodsy, warm, and timeless look. If you’re the kind of couple that loves sharing a pint and good conversation, why not make that part of your engagement story? Iowa’s local breweries—like Exile Brewing Co. in Des Moines or Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City—offer an edgy, urban backdrop with tons of personality. This botanical garden near Iowa State University bursts with color and variety. From butterfly wings to rose gardens, Reiman offers a lush, romantic setting, especially in summer.
22. snell-crawford Park - fort dodge, ia
This Park offers a beautifully serene setting for engagement photos, perfect for couples who love natural, easygoing backdrops with plenty of charm. The park’s winding creek, graceful footbridges, and wide-open grassy areas create a soft, romantic atmosphere that photographs effortlessly. Tall trees frame the light in all the right ways, giving you a mix of sun-drenched portraits and cozy shaded moments.
23. Bochner farms - indianola, ia
Think endless fields of wildflowers, charming garden beds, and a dreamy, rustic farmhouse feel.
